U.S. Route 99

Join me as I drive the full length of former U.S. Route 99 from the Mexican border at Calexico CA (top right) to the Canadian border at Blaine WA.

Though no longer signed as a U.S. highway, “Old 99” remains a very important part of surface transportation in the western U.S.

The concrete surface of the historic “Ridge Route” north of Los Angeles (bottom right) was poured in 1915-1917.

This historic roadway was signed as U.S. Route 99 from 1926 to 1933 when the alignment was moved to a more “modern” three-lane highway – an unsafe arrangement that didn’t last long.

Final details of “U.S. Route 99” are being written now.  I expect the book will be available for sale in the first half of 2010.

Stay tuned to my web site for production updates.

"Old 99" between Calexico CA (above) and Indio CA has been officially recognized as a historic route, and signed accordingly.
This is part of the original "Ridge Route" north of Los Angeles, and the stuff of highway legend.
